Roots is an allegorical representation of life and death in a neolitic community. The story illustrates the beginning of human sedentarism, at a time when man was still entirely dependent on nature to survive. High in the mountains and valleys of Castro Laboreiro, shepherds, hunters, farmers live a rudimentary lifestyle. There is a powerful spirit of solidarity in the group since they all depend on the efforts of others to survive.
One day Ancu, an important tribe hunter dies. All activities stop to begin the process of preparing the passage of Ancu to another, spiritual, world.
